The FOCS (Federation Of Old-Cornwall Societies) has just publish a Christmas Anthology, compiled by George Pritchard; OK, it's in English, but it's one of the most interesting books we've seen yet. Packed with all sorts of fascinating anecdotes, traditions and recipes (for food and strong drink!), it paints an entrancing picture of Christmas in Cornwall through the ages. Can't recommend this strongly enough as a way to eat, sing, dance and be merry this Christmas - Cornish-style!

Last weekend saw the second 'Tregedna Weekend' organised by Maga for fluent Cornish speakers and near-fluent students, in Falmouth. The event happens over a weekend, during which most of the participants live together for a weekend at the Tregedna Farm holiday site, and are not allowed to use a single word of English; all communication, written or spoken, is in Cornish. There are interesting events to encourage broader use of Cornish; amongst them, walks in the surrounding countryside and the competition pictured here.
Henn o kesstriv heudh dhe dhrehevel pons ynter dew le, dre dhevnydhya namoy es spaghetti ha komolennow-hweg. Termyn da (ha glenysek) o gwrys gans pubonan hag yth esa nebes tybyansow skentel dhe wul an amkan! Rag kavoes moy a dherivadow yn kever Tregedna, mir orth gwiasva Maga.
This was a fun contest to build a bridge between two points using only spaghetti and marshmallows. A fun (and sticky) time was had by everyone and there were some interesting ideas to achieve the aim. For more information about Tregedna, have a look at the Maga website.

This is the recently updated (2010) publication based on Ray Edwards' extremely popular reference work, first published in 1995. A comprehensive list of Cornish verbs; over 1400 in this edition compared to over 1100 in the original. Over 280 of the verbs are displayed in full conjugation of all tenses, which is slightly more than the original, and this edition includes a guide to the mutations of each displayed verb. The new A5 format takes up less space in a bag than the orginal in A4, while still providing more essential information for the more advanced learner. A 'must-have' for anyone learning Cornish at Kesva 3rd-grade or beyond and a hugely valuable addition to any Cornish-speaker's bookshelf.

Wendy (Bodmin Class) entered the Cornwall Music Festival's competition for reading in Cornish Language (4th grade & above) this year and gained a certificate of commendation for her masterful rendition of The King's New Clothes, from Jowann Richard's 'Hwedhlow Nowydh Ha Koth'. She was awarded 85 points, only 5 points behind the winner, which is a considerable achievement considering the length and complexity of the piece and the time-limit of four minutes which was allowed for the reading. This was Wendy's first attempt at anything like this and it took some considerable courage to put her knowledge of Cornish on show. Well-done Wendy and look-out everyone else in the competition next year!

Skol Veythrin Kerensa is now into it''s fifth week of fun and games at Camborne College. The creche, run by Rhisiart Tal-e-bot and Conan Jenkin is the first Cornish-medium pre-school and is gaining popularity fast with kids and parents alike. Taking place in the Kerensa Building of Cornwall College Camborne on Saturday mornings at 10.30 - 12.30am, the kids learn simple cornish through counting, singing, painting and reading stories, while their parents in another room learn Cornish which they can use around the home and create resources for the kids to use at home. The creche is currently a pilot-project supported by amongst others, the Cornish Language Partnership and Cornwall College, but with ten families already signed-up and interest growing fast, it looks like this is the start of something big!
